What Is Twitter?

Twitter is a free social networking and microblogging service that allows its users to stay connected in real-time.  Twitter is an information network. Millions of people, organizations, and businesses use it to discover and share new information.  On Twitter, anyone can read, write and share messages of up to 140 characters. These messages, or Tweets, are public and available to anyone interested in them. Twitter users subscribe to your messages by following your account. Followers receive every one of your messages in their timeline, a feed of all the accounts they have subscribed to.  When you combine messages that are quick to write, easy to read, public, opt-in, and accessible anywhere, you have a powerful, real-time way of communicating.

What Does Twitter Do For Businesses?

As a business, you can use Twitter to quickly share information, gather market intelligence and insights, and build relationships with people who care about your company. Often, there is already a conversation about your business happening on Twitter.
Users post messages of up to 140 characters, referred to as “tweets”. The user’s followers receive those tweets in real-time. Twitter boast over 200 million users posting over 155,000,000 Tweets per day. The audience demographic is:
  • Average age - 31
  • 47% Male and 53% Female
  • Age 18-34 - 47%; Age 35-49 - 31%; 50+ - 21%
  • Salary: 28% - $30-$60K; 24% - $60-$100K; 27% - $100K+
  • Education: 46% college grad; 17% grad school

You can find new friends or follow those you already know. Do this by using Twitter features such as People Search, Twitter Search, Address Book Import and URL Look-Up. As you make friends (i.e. follow others tweets) they will likely add you as a friend (i.e. follow your tweets). Give people some sort of information, something they are likely to “re?tweet” or RT (i.e. share with their followers).

Twitter Promoted Accounts

Whether you're gearing up for a big product release or event, or just looking to expand your presence online, building a strong base of Twitter followers who will share your content and amplify your message makes all the difference.

Following is one of the strongest, most loyal forms of affinity online—a new follower is asking to receive each Tweet you send in their timeline. A new follower stays with you.

Part of Who to follow, Twitter's account recommendation engine, Promoted Accounts highlight your account to users most likely to find it interesting. Twitter looks at your account and followers to identify similar accounts and similar followers, for amazing accuracy. Users find Promoted Accounts a useful part of discovering new businesses, content, and people on Twitter.  Build a critical mass of loyal followers. Promoted Accounts are ideal for:

  • Turbo-charging user discovery
  • Building up to a big event or your next product release
  • Capitalizing on a particular event or period of the year when the account will be most relevant
